INFORMATIONAL TEXT

This is a text that I had read to make sense of it,
 before going into making
ICE CREAM.

***

A COLLOID is a liquid in which microscopic particles of a solid or another liquid are suspended.  Milk is an emulsion.  An emulsion is a colloid in which both the solvent and the solute are liquids.

Note that a solvent is a liquid that allows another substance to dissolve in it.  A solute is the substance that dissolves in the solvent.

VOCABULARY WORDS
***
DEFINITION OF COLLOID :
The particles do not settle, and cannot be separated out by ordinary filtering or centrifuging like those in a suspension.

DEFINITION OF PARTICLES :
A minute portion of matter, or the least possible amount.

DEFINITION OF SUSPENDED :
Temporarily prevent from continuing or being in force or effect.

DEFINITION OF SOLVENT :
Able to dissolve other substances or,  the liquid in which a solute is dissolved to form a solution.

DEFINITION OF SOLUTE :
The minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.

GOD STRAND

This is my Google Draw about why I think God created me.
It was a new way to show my understanding about why god created me.

MILK EXPERIMENT

CHILLY MILK EXPERIMENT:

BEFORE

{ AFTER }

THIS PICTURE ABOVE IS THE THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MILK I SELECTED TO EXPERIMENT ON,
THEY ARE CONDENSED, ALMOND & UP & GO MILK
***
PURPOSE:   TO OBSERVE AND RECORD THE CHANGES WHEN DIFFERENT MILK IS PUT IN THE FREEZER.

WHAT YOU NEED:
a selection of 3 different type of milk
clear container

WHAT TO DO:
Put  an equal volume of each type of milk in a clear container
Place each container in the freezer
Record what happens to each type of milk as it freezes.  Note its colour, texture and shape.
Record the time it takes to each variety to freeze.

Type of milk
what it looked like once it
had been freezed.
Time
taken to freeze
UP & GO
Icy, the colour went kind of darker.
It took over night.
CONDENSED MILK
I looks the same. ( GOEY )
Not sure because it is still not frozen
ALMOND MILK
It looked icy, ( WHITE ICE )
did not look like milk at all.
It took over night

UP & GO PREDICTION :
`With the Up & Go our prediction is that it'll go kind of flaky/icy
The colour will go lighter so will the texture and the shape will be round, depending on the shape of the container or cup.
TIME : 30 - 35 MINS

CONDENSED MILK PREDICTION :
We think that it’ll freeze slowly because of how goey it is, or it might just be icy cold.
The colour will kind of stay the same so as the texture & the shape will just be goey and round because of the cup it is in. But then it might only be the top that freezes, and the inside it’ll just be icy cold and goey.
TIME : 30-55 MINS

ALMOND MILK PREDICTION :
We think that the almond milk will freeze, but it’ll kind of take it’s time. We say that the colour will stay the same or look a bit watery.  The texture would look the same and the shape would be round/circle.
TIME : 30 - 23 MINS

QUESTIONS :
***
  1. What ingredients are in CONDENSED MILK ?!?!
ANSWER
- Moisture : 31.0 PERCENT.
- Sugar ( sucrose ) : 41.0  PERCENT
- Milk Sugar ( lactose ) : 10.5 PERCENT
- Fat : 8.0 PERCENT
- Proteins : 8.0 PERCENT
- Ash : 1.5 PERCENT

  1. Why doesn't CONDENSED MILK freeze ?
ANSWER : because there's no water in it...
( Cause all the water has been taken out of it.)

*****

CONCLUSION :
My conclusion is that I found out that CONDENSED MILK does not freeze because it barely has any water in it. And for something to freeze it must have water in it.
Like for an example the Up & Go & Almond Milk froze because it had a fair amount of water in it.  So like depending on the amount of water in a liquid to may freeze differently.  If a liquid has a lot of water in it, it'll freeze fast and it'll be completely frozen. For a liquid that has just a little bit of water, will freeze slowly and there is a 50/50 chance on the liquid being completely frozen.

Liquid can change into a solid.

St Francis Retreat

( This picture above, is me and my group, during the treasure hunt )
***
The St Francis Retreat was about building our Leadership skills and learning about what a leader is.

To me I thought the retreat was a great opportunity for all of us that attended,  because we are the seniors of the school. We can use what we learnt and take it back to school and share it with everyone. I can say at first I was acting like the retreat was a socialising event, but then I got into the idea of wanting to build my leadership skills.  I got in there I listened to what Brother Philip and his assistant helper Josephine had to tell us, and I thought about it.

The activities set out for us showed us how it was showing leadership, because in between those activities you could always find the three main words of our retreat. Aroha, Tika & Pono.
In all the activities we showed AROHA in different ways and the same with TIKA & PONO.

I loved the retreat it was an amazing opportunity for me and the rest of my year eight peers. I can seriously say that the next set of year eights would enjoy their stay at the St Francis Retreat Centre, and also enjoy learning about leadership.

Farewell Mass for Mrs Pole

My thinking about the Farewell Mass for Mrs Pole, was that It was a emotional start to the morning.
Personally I haven’t known Mrs Pole for a long time but I know enough to want to miss her.
I thought that the mass went well and that it was superb.

Milk Experiment.

The Science of milk
Aim: Can we get water out of milk?
*******************
Process:
First of all the milk was poured into the electric frying pan.

We then put the lid on top and watched as it did it’s thing. It was then getting bubbly and started to sizzle. We then took the lid off and the steam came rushing out. The steam was basically the water/milk particles from the milk evaporating.  Our point was practically proven that you can get water out of milk.  The water that came out of them milk came out in the form of steam.
*******************
Prediction: what do you think will happen and why?
I predict that it’ll go bubbly and it’ll sizzle a bit.
That steam will come up.
*******************
Equipments :
- Frying Pan
- Spatula
- Milk
*******************
Method: what do you think made the changes happen?

- I think that it was basically the heat that made all the transformation happen.  Cause if it wasn't for the heat then I wouldn't have proven that you can get water out of milk.
