Fractions

Last week I did a maths activity on Fractions.
This is what I did.
A) At a fancy dress party.  1/4 of 80 had costumes on.
Show how you worked out how many people had costumes on at the party :
Working out :
4 x 20 = 80
80 ÷ 4 = 20
Answer : There were 20 people in costumes at the fancy dress party.
***
B) 2/3 of the class of 24 students owned cell phones.
Show how to work out how many students owned cell phones.
Working out :
3 x 8 = 24
24 ÷ 3 = 8
1/3 of 24 = 8 and 8 doubled is 16 so 2/3 of 24 is 16.
Answer :  16 students on cell phones.
***
C) There are 180 students. 6/10 of them walk to school.
Show how to work out how many students walk to school.
Working out :
10 x 18 = 180

180 ÷ 10 = 18

The Bush

Today was the last test of testing week.
It was my writing test, this is my writing I did.

“Wow Danny, you were right.  This forest is great for hiking.”  “ I know right,  now stop being a chatterbox and lets get going.”  Danny and his friends carried on hiking through the forest,  where all the trees had birds sitting up in them,  and sticks and stones were scattered all over the paths.

While Danny and his friends got further into the forest,  they realised a funny smell.  It smelt like rotten meat and blood.  The group of friends kept going and they got to a strange place,  they all looked around and there stood a big and hairy figure,  it had blood streaming down the side of its mouth and it started to growl.  The hairy figure had something in it’s mouth,  but they couldn’t see what it was.  Danny and his friends stood where they were nice and calm,  even though they had the thought of maybe, getting eaten by a big and hairy figure.  The figure dropped what was in it’s mouth and dashed off like the speed of lightning.  One of Danny’s friends Maddie, went to see what the strange looking figure dropped out of it’s mouth. It was ... a humans finger,  Maddie screamed out in terror and ran to Danny.  Danny asked what it was and Maddie told him.  Another one of Danny’s friends decided to follow trail of blood that was leading further into the forest.  He wanted to see where it’ll lead them to.  Maddie knew what it would be, a dead body with a missing finger.

Danny and his friends were almost there when they came up to a huge puddle of blood,  then the trail carried on.  Maddie looked around and found that there was something wrong,  she didn’t get how there was a big puddle of blood and how the trail carried on.  She knew there was someone else in the forest at the same time,  excluding the big and hairy figure she meant.  They finally got somewhere, where they could see bloody footprints and hand prints on the trees.  Danny knew that someone was definitely hurt,  but could balance properly, so the person had to lean on the trees to keep them self up.  The group of friends heard a painful scream,  it sounded like someone was in pain and really needed help.  Maddie dialed 111, but she had no signal, so they just ran up to where the scream came from, so  that they could help the person in need of help.  They got to the person and it was a girl who looked like she was either 16 or 17.  She was missing a finger and had blood all over.  Danny,  Maddie and Max all decided who would go and get help,  it was Max.  So Max left Danny and Maddie alone to keep the girl company, and to make sure nothing else would happen to her.

Max was gone for about 1 hour and a half and then returned with the ambulance.  Maddie, Max and Danny stepped back so that the ambulance people could do what they needed to do, to help the innocent girl who got attacked by a BIG AND HAIRY figure.

The girl was in hospital and was fast asleep.  Max,  Maddie and Danny were so happy they could help someone that needed their help.  When the girl awoke from her sleep she thanked them all for helping her, she was really grateful for people like them.

Testing week

This week I have been doing test on Maths, Reading and Writing and other test called Star and Gloss test.  I am so happy that testing week is over.  But the important thing for me is that I got all my tests done.  I know that I did well because I put all my effort into it and I did the best I could.  I can’t wait to receive my console, to see how much I've improved.  I hope that I've done enough to move on to the next stage, and I bet I have.

Today I have spent my morning using 5 Triangles, 1 Parallelogram and 1 Square. These pieces are called a Tangram.
With these pieces I made up 4 images.

The reason why we had received this activity, was because it was to do with Geometry in Maths.

Here are the 4 images I had put together.

Rugby League

RUGBY LEAGUE
*****
Today was such an awesome experience for me.  A young Junior Warrior’s player had come to our school to teach us some new drills of Rugby League.
Rugby League is our new Kiwi sport for term 3.

*****
For me having the opportunity to try out a new sport is quite buzzing.  Like playing games that actually help your body, as in exercising by running around and doing star jumps and push ups.

*****
Playing rugby league is really fun, it is such an awesome sport to have as a kiwi sport.

My Report on Spanish People

Report on Spanish People
***
- Opening Statement
Spanish people are very proud of their traditions which are Bullfighting and Flamenco. They enjoy socialising with one another especially at big festivals and celebrations like the Tomatina festival and the Saint Joseph in Valencia festival.  They are friendly as well. If you were to have a stroll along the streets, the Spanish people will greet you and say ‘hello’.
***
Spanish people also love their food,  one of the most popular dishes in Spain is the Tortilla Espanol. The Tortilla Espanol is called a Omelette in English.  They also have great love for their Flamenco song and dance and have been doing it for hundreds of years.  Spanish people have been doing Flamenco for hundreds of years because it is a special tradition.
***
In Spain there are also a few different religions like : Roman Catholics, Muslims and Jews but out of the whole of Spain most of them are all Roman Catholics.  Spanish people also enjoy shopping at markets, they say that each market in Spain has fresh new food ready for the locals. In Spain there are many paintings that were painted over 14,000 years ago by famous Spanish artists, and Spanish people have treasured it in the caves of Altamira in Northern Spain.

Spanish children are also very playful especially when it comes to playing football.

  • The writing has paragraphs, each one focusing on a different aspect of the phenomenon. Topic sentences are used.
  • A general statement about the topic usually rounds off the report.
  • Diagrams, illustrations or photographs are often used.
***
Language
  • Present tense verbs are used.
  • Verbs for describing and classifying (is, are, has, have, belongs to) are used.
  • Action verbs are used to describe behaviours (climb, eat)
  • Action verbs are used to describe behaviours (climb, eat).

  • Scientific or technical reports focus on classes of things (dogs).
  • Nouns and noun phrases are used rather than personal pronouns.

Cross Country Report
***
Opening Statement :
Cross Country at St Pius X is a day of running.  Cross country started at 1.30 in the afternoon, the whole school gathered in the school tennis courts.  The races were just about to begin.  The first load of runners were getting ready.
Paragraph one / first aspect of the Event - Cross Country :
The 12 and 13 year olds started first with their run,  then it went on from the 11 years olds down to the 5 year olds. But of course the senior and junior syndicate had totally different courses.  `Each age group from the senior syndicate went straight after each other.
Paragraph two - Second aspect of the Event
The starting point was at the back of the church in front of the school office.
Each student of each age group stood at the starting line waiting for the big BANG for them to all start running. Most of them jogged down the hill and carried on until they reached the hill and started walking.
Final Paragraph - Last aspect
The senior syndicate had finally finished all their laps and it was up to the junior syndicate to start with their races.  The junior age groups went from 8 to 5 year olds. It went 8 year old boys then 8 year old girls, it was the same for all the junior age groups. Cross country was almost finished it was just up to the 5 year old boys and girls. The last race was very fierce for the 5 year olds, everyone of them were catching up with each other and there was a lot of speed in them. Although the course was really small, the course for the juniors was just around the school field but the senior course was 2 rounds around the block.

My Reflection for Week 1 of Term 3

For week 1 in term 3, I feel that I have learnt a lot.  One of the things that I have learnt this week is learning about a country in Europe, which is Spain.  I have learnt the greetings the basic words and also the number song.
I have learnt the Structure of an Informational Report and to be able to use the fix up strategy to be able to become a better reader.
So this week I feel confident that
I have learnt a lot this week.
